Low Budget

Another highlight of The Kinks’ Arista years, Low Budget was the group’s first album since 1973 to not be recorded at Konk Studios in London, opting instead for New York’s famed Power Station. From this vantage point—not too far from the legendary CBGB—Ray Davies tackles the changing fortunes of musicians and ordinary citizens alike on both sides of the Atlantic. With punk overtaking traditional rock and roll and energy crises and economic woes unsettling the population, Ray’s lyrics on Low Budget are some of his most cutting, including songs like “A Gallon Of Gas” and the minor hit “(I Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman.”
